The background of the study climbs down a ladder. It starts wide enough that any reader can follow, and it ends narrow enough that your specific study is the only sensible next sentence. A Nigerian final year project background is normally two to four pages and five rungs deep, and every rung after the first needs a citation.
This page gives you three finished backgrounds, each broken out rung by rung, plus a table of which Nigerian body actually supplies evidence at each level. Our section-by-section guide to Chapter One covers the order of the whole chapter.
The five rungs
| Rung | What it establishes | Typical length | Citation needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. The field | Why this subject matters at all, in one or two sentences | 1 paragraph | Optional |
| 2. The Nigerian frame | The national policy, regulation or reported figure that sets the expectation | 1–2 paragraphs | Yes, named source and year |
| 3. The sector or state | How the expectation plays out in your sector, state or institution type | 1–2 paragraphs | Yes |
| 4. The specific setting | The department, hospital, firm, LGA or school system you will study | 1 paragraph | Yes where a figure is claimed |
| 5. The variables | The two or three things whose relationship your study is about | 1 paragraph | Yes, from prior studies |
The commonest failure is a background that never leaves rung two. Three pages about education in Nigeria, then a sudden jump to a study of one secondary school, is the pattern supervisors return with “narrow it down” written in the margin.

Where the evidence at each rung comes from, in Nigeria
| Rung | Education project | Business, accounting or finance project | Health project |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2. National frame | National Policy on Education; UBEC and NERDC publications | Central Bank of Nigeria publications; National Bureau of Statistics releases | Federal Ministry of Health policy documents; national survey reports |
| 3. Sector or state | State ministry of education and SUBEB reports; WAEC and NECO result summaries | Sector reports; Nigerian Exchange listings and regulator filings | State ministry of health bulletins; facility-level annual reports |
| 4. Setting | School or LGA records obtained with a permission letter | Company annual reports, which are published and need no permission | Facility records, which need ethical clearance before access |
| 5. Variables | Peer-reviewed studies on the same variable pair | Peer-reviewed studies on the same variable pair | Peer-reviewed studies on the same variable pair |
Two practical consequences follow from that table. A project whose rung-four evidence is a company annual report can be finished on your own timetable, while one whose rung-four evidence sits inside a hospital cannot. And the source you name at rung two determines how defensible your whole opening is: a named publication with a year survives a panel question, a secondary blog post does not. Our guides to where education students find project data and where economics students find theirs set out the specific publications.
How to read the three examples
Each example is a shape, not a claim. No real statistic, study or author is attached to any sentence, because a fabricated citation in the background is the single easiest fault for a panel to expose. Where your own evidence belongs you will see [cite] for a source you have read and [figure] for a number with its publication and year. Fill those from documents you actually opened.
Example 1: Education — teacher workload and pupil achievement
Rung 1. Education systems are judged, in the end, on what learners can do. Everything a ministry funds, from curriculum revision to school construction, is justified by an expected effect on learning, and the classroom is where that expectation is either met or lost.
Rung 2. Nigerian education policy sets out expectations for teacher qualification and for the conditions under which teaching happens, and national reporting on basic education has repeatedly identified pupil-teacher ratio as a constraint on delivery [cite]. The reported national pupil-teacher ratio at basic level is [figure] [cite].
Rung 3. That national figure conceals a wide spread across states. In [named state], the ratio reported for public primary schools is [figure] [cite], and the share of teaching posts filled against establishment is [figure] [cite]. Where posts are unfilled, teachers take combined classes, and the time available for marking, remediation and lesson preparation falls in proportion.
Rung 4. Public primary schools in [named LGA] sit at the harder end of that distribution, with [figure] schools operating combined classes in the [year] session [cite]. Head teachers in the area have reported that the practice is a staffing response rather than a pedagogical choice [cite].
Rung 5. Studies relating teacher workload to pupil achievement have generally used class size as the workload measure [cite], which captures the number of learners but not the number of preparations a teacher carries. Whether teaching load defined as preparations per week, rather than pupils per class, predicts achievement in a Nigerian public primary setting has not been established [cite].
Reading it. The ladder never jumps. Rung three exists specifically to explain why a national figure does not settle the question, and rung five arrives at a variable pair — preparations per week and achievement — that is measurable from school records plus a standardised achievement test. A background that reaches a measurable variable pair has done its job.
Example 2: Banking and finance — credit policy and lending to small firms
Rung 1. Small and medium enterprises absorb a large share of employment in most economies, and their capacity to grow depends on whether the banking system will lend to them at a price they can bear.
Rung 2. Monetary policy in Nigeria operates through instruments set by the Central Bank of Nigeria, whose published statistical series report the policy rate, the cash reserve ratio and the composition of bank credit by sector [cite]. Credit to the private sector over [years] moved from [figure] to [figure] [cite].
Rung 3. The sectoral composition of that credit is uneven. The share going to [named sector] over the same period was [figure] [cite], against a policy expectation that the sector would be prioritised [cite]. Banks cite collateral quality and the cost of appraising small exposures as the binding constraints [cite].
Rung 4. Deposit money banks listed on the Nigerian Exchange publish audited annual reports that disclose loan portfolios and, in many cases, sectoral breakdowns. For the [number] banks in the sample, disclosed lending to small and medium enterprises over [years] is obtainable from those reports without any access request.
Rung 5. Nigerian studies of the relationship between monetary policy instruments and bank lending have mostly modelled aggregate credit [cite]. Whether changes in the policy rate transmit differently to small-enterprise lending than to aggregate lending, for listed Nigerian banks over [years], has not been tested.
Reading it. Rung four does something the education example cannot: it establishes that the data already exists in public. That single paragraph is what makes the topic approvable, because it answers the first question a supervisor asks about a finance topic. If you are still choosing, our list of banking and finance project topics is organised by exactly this constraint.
Example 3: Public health — antenatal attendance and facility distance
Rung 1. Maternal outcomes turn substantially on whether a woman is seen, early and repeatedly, by a skilled provider during pregnancy. Antenatal care is the mechanism through which most preventable complications are caught.
Rung 2. Nigerian health policy sets an expected minimum schedule of antenatal contacts, and national survey reporting gives the proportion of women meeting that schedule as [figure] [cite]. The same reporting shows the proportion delivering with a skilled attendant at [figure] [cite].
Rung 3. Those national proportions differ sharply by zone and by residence. In [named state], antenatal attendance meeting the minimum schedule is reported at [figure], and the rural–urban difference within the state is [figure] [cite]. Primary health centres are the intended first point of contact, but their distribution across wards is uneven [cite].
Rung 4. In [named LGA], [figure] primary health centres serve [figure] wards, and the facility register at [named PHC] records [figure] antenatal bookings in [year], of which [figure] completed the recommended schedule [cite].
Rung 5. Studies of antenatal uptake in Nigeria have typically modelled it against maternal education, parity and household income [cite]. Distance to the nearest functioning facility is frequently named as a barrier in qualitative work [cite] but is rarely measured directly alongside those variables. This study measures travel distance and time against completion of the antenatal schedule among women attending [named PHC].
Reading it. Rung five names what the literature keeps asserting but does not measure. That contrast — frequently named, rarely measured — is one of the most reliable gaps available to an undergraduate, because closing it needs a better instrument rather than a bigger sample. A study of this shape requires ethical clearance before you approach the facility; see how ethical clearance works for a Nigerian health project.

The six faults that get a background sent back
- Dictionary opening. “Education can be defined as…” No panel needs the definition, and it signals that the rest will be padding.
- Stuck at rung two. National policy and national figures for three pages, then an abrupt jump to one school. Add rungs three and four.
- Uncited figures. A percentage with no publication and no year is not evidence. Either name the source or remove the number.
- Literature review in disguise. Study after study summarised. The background names the shape of prior work in one or two sentences; the detail belongs in Chapter Two.
- No variables by the end. If a reader cannot name the two things your study relates, rung five is missing.
- Stale sources. A background resting on figures a decade old invites the question of what has changed since. Use the most recent published figure and state its year explicitly.
A fifteen-minute self-check
Print the section. Write the rung number in the margin beside each paragraph. If any number appears three times in a row, you are circling; if a number is missing entirely, that is the rung to write next. Then read only the final paragraph: it should make your statement of the problem feel inevitable rather than surprising. If it does not, the ladder ended on the wrong rung.
Finally, check that the gap you are claiming is real. Checking whether your topic has already been studied takes under an hour and is cheaper than discovering the answer at defence.

Frequently asked questions
How long should the background of the study be?
Two to four pages in most Nigerian departments, which is roughly six to ten paragraphs. Your department’s project guideline governs; where it is silent, five rungs written properly will land in that range without padding.
What is the difference between the background and the introduction?
In most Nigerian formats the background is the opening part of the introduction. Chapter One is titled Introduction, and its first numbered section is the background to the study. Check whether your department wants a separate short introductory paragraph before it.
Should the background contain statistics?
At rungs two, three and four, yes, and each one needs its publication and year named in the text. A background with no figures anywhere reads as opinion; a background with figures and no sources reads as invention.
Can I start the background with a definition?
Avoid it. Definitions of terms have their own section at the end of Chapter One. Opening with one wastes the paragraph that should be establishing why the subject matters.
How many citations does a background need?
Enough that every empirical claim carries one, which in practice is usually eight to fifteen for an undergraduate project. Counting citations is the wrong test; the right test is whether any sentence asserts a fact without a source.
How recent should my sources be?
For figures at rungs two to four, the most recent published version, with its year stated. For theory and for the variable relationship at rung five, age matters much less. If the newest official figure is several years old, say so rather than presenting it as current.
Can the background mention my research gap?
Rung five should point at it, but the gap is argued in the statement of the problem. The background makes the gap visible; the problem statement makes the case that it matters.
Can I copy the structure of these examples?
The structure, yes. The sentences, no — every example above is built from bracketed placeholders precisely so that it cannot be submitted. Take the five rungs and write your own text from your own sources.
My project is a design or build, not a survey. Does it still need a background?
Yes, and the ladder still applies. Rung five simply ends on a performance problem rather than a variable pair: what the current system or process does badly, and what your design is meant to improve.
What if my department calls it “background to the study”?
Same section. Nigerian departments use “background of the study” and “background to the study” interchangeably. Use whichever wording appears in your own department’s guideline and be consistent throughout the project.
