Statement of the Problem Examples for a Nigerian Final Year Project, by Department (2026)

A statement of the problem names the gap between what should be happening and what is actually happening, shows that the gap matters, shows that nobody has closed it for your context, and ends by saying what your study will do about it. It is one to two pages, it is argued rather than described, and it is the section your panel reads first.

Most guides stop at that definition. What Nigerian students actually need is the finished thing on the page. Below are six statements of the problem, fully written, one per department, each followed by a reading of the moves it makes. Our section-by-section guide to Chapter One covers the order of the whole chapter; this page is about getting one section right.

What a statement of the problem has to do

Four moves, in this order. Miss one and the section reads as background rather than as a problem.

  1. The ideal. One or two sentences on what the policy, standard or professional expectation says should happen. This is where a named Nigerian instrument or body belongs.
  2. The reality. The evidence that it is not happening, cited. This is the sentence that must carry a reference, not an opinion.
  3. The consequence. Who is harmed, and how. Without this, a panel member will ask why the study is worth three months of your life.
  4. The gap. What has been studied, where, and why that leaves your setting unanswered. Then one sentence on what your study does.

Notice that only move two needs data. Students routinely inflate move one and skip move four, which produces a section full of general statements about Nigeria and nothing a supervisor can approve.

How to read the six examples below

Each example is a shape, not a claim. None of them contains a real statistic, a real study or a real author, because inventing one would be exactly the fault this page exists to prevent. Every place where your own evidence belongs is marked [cite] for a source you have read and [figure] for a number you have taken from a named publication with its year. Fill those in from sources you actually opened; a reference you have not opened is how an honest student ends up facing an integrity question.

1. Education (B.Ed / B.A.Ed)

The National Policy on Education positions continuous assessment as an integral part of the evaluation of learners, and the expectation in secondary schools is that assessment records are kept systematically and used to inform teaching. In practice, teachers in many public secondary schools record scores to satisfy administrative returns rather than to redirect instruction [cite], and the proportion of teachers who report having received training in assessment design is [figure] [cite].

The consequence is that assessment produces a number without producing information. Learners who have not mastered a topic move on with the class because nothing in the record flags them, and remediation, where it happens at all, happens at the end of the term when the syllabus no longer allows for it. Teachers are then judged on results they had no working mechanism to improve.

Studies on continuous assessment in Nigeria have concentrated on teachers’ awareness and on policy implementation at state level [cite]. What has not been established for secondary schools in [your LGA] is whether the assessment records teachers keep are actually used in instructional decisions, and what determines whether they are. This study therefore examines the instructional use of continuous assessment records by secondary school teachers in [your LGA].

Why it works. Move one cites a policy expectation rather than a truism. Move two turns the failure into something observable, the use of a record, which a questionnaire can actually measure. Move four narrows to one local government area, which is what makes the study finishable in a semester.

2. Nursing Science

Infection prevention and control guidance requires hand hygiene at defined moments in patient care, and compliance is measurable by direct observation against a standard checklist. Observed compliance in hospital wards frequently falls short of the standard [cite], with reported rates of [figure] in comparable settings [cite].

Every missed moment is a transmission opportunity, and the burden falls on patients who are already immunocompromised, on nurses who acquire and carry infection between wards, and on a hospital budget that absorbs longer admissions. Where the shortfall is treated as a knowledge problem, training is repeated and compliance does not move, because knowledge was never the binding constraint.

Nigerian studies in this area have largely measured knowledge and attitude through self-report questionnaires [cite]. Direct observation of practice at [named teaching hospital], and the ward-level factors that separate compliant from non-compliant moments, has not been documented. This study observes hand hygiene compliance among nurses in selected wards of [named teaching hospital] and identifies the facility factors associated with it.

Why it works. It names the exact gap between what has been measured (knowledge, by self-report) and what has not (practice, by observation). That contrast is the gap, and it also justifies the choice of instrument in Chapter Three. Note that a study of this shape needs ethical clearance before any data collection; our guide to ethics approval for a Nigerian nursing project sets out the route.

3. Accounting

Listed companies in Nigeria are required to prepare financial statements in accordance with the applicable reporting framework, and the audit report exists to give users assurance that those statements are free of material misstatement. Corporate failures and restatements continue to occur after clean audit opinions [cite], and the number of enforcement actions relating to financial reporting in the period under review was [figure] [cite].

When the assurance does not hold, the loss is borne by shareholders who priced the security on the reported figures, by lenders who set covenants against them, and ultimately by the credibility of the reporting framework itself. Regulators respond by adding disclosure requirements, which raises the cost of compliance for every company without addressing whatever produced the failure.

Existing Nigerian work has examined audit quality mainly through firm size and audit fees as proxies [cite]. The relationship between audit committee characteristics and the quality of reported earnings in [named sector] companies listed on the Nigerian Exchange has not been tested for the period [years]. This study examines that relationship using published annual reports for [years].

Why it works. The data source is implied by the problem itself, which is the mark of a feasible accounting topic: published annual reports are obtainable, so the study can be finished without waiting on anyone’s permission.

4. Mass Communication

Professional codes require that reporting on conflict avoids inflaming it and that sources are attributed. In practice, coverage of communal conflict in Nigerian newspapers frequently identifies parties by ethnic or religious label in headlines [cite], and the share of conflict stories relying on a single official source has been reported at [figure] [cite].

Framing of that kind does not merely describe a conflict, it supplies each side with a public account of who the aggressor is. The cost is borne by communities whose grievances harden around a media narrative and by editors who then cannot report a settlement because their own archive has taken a position.

Nigerian scholarship has documented conflict framing largely through audience surveys and through single-title case studies [cite]. A comparative content analysis of how [two named newspapers] framed [named conflict or period], using an explicit coding scheme, has not been carried out. This study analyses that coverage across [date range].

Why it works. It commits to a unit of analysis, the story, and to a comparison. That is what allows Chapter Three to specify a sampling rule for editions rather than a vague plan to “analyse newspapers”. Our guide to Chapter Three for a mass communication project covers the design that follows.

5. Computer Science

Departmental results processing is expected to produce accurate, auditable and timely results, with a clear record of who changed what. In many departments the process still runs on spreadsheets circulated between course lecturers, the examinations officer and the head of department [cite], and the average time between the last examination and the release of results in [named institution] was [figure].

The costs are concrete. Transcription between spreadsheets introduces errors that surface months later at board level, there is no reliable audit trail when a score is disputed, and students who need a result for a scholarship or a service posting wait on a process with no visible state.

Existing work on academic records systems in Nigeria has largely presented general-purpose designs evaluated on functional completeness [cite]. A system designed around the actual approval chain used in [named department], and evaluated against the errors that chain currently produces, has not been reported. This study designs and evaluates such a system.

Why it works. A software project still needs a problem, not a feature list. This one states the error the software must reduce, which gives Chapter Four something to measure other than screenshots. See writing up a software project for how the evaluation is reported.

6. Agriculture / Agricultural Economics

Improved varieties and recommended agronomic practices are released on the expectation that smallholders will adopt them and that yields will rise accordingly. Adoption among smallholders in [named state] remains partial [cite], with [figure] of surveyed farmers reporting use of the recommended practice in full [cite].

Partial adoption is worse than it sounds: a variety bred for a fertiliser regime that the farmer cannot afford underperforms the local variety it replaced, so the farmer’s own trial teaches him that the recommendation fails. Extension then has to overcome not ignorance but direct negative experience.

Adoption studies in Nigeria have commonly modelled the decision as a function of farmer characteristics such as age, education and farm size [cite]. What has not been examined for [named crop] farmers in [named LGA] is which components of the recommended package are dropped, and why. This study identifies the pattern of partial adoption and its determinants among [named crop] farmers in [named LGA].

Why it works. It reframes a tired topic. “Determinants of adoption” has been done everywhere; “which parts of the package get dropped” has not, and it is answerable with the same questionnaire and the same farmer population figure you would have needed anyway.

The fill-in template

Five sentences. Write them badly first, then expand each into a paragraph.

  1. According to [policy, standard or professional body], [what should be happening].
  2. However, [evidence that it is not happening] [cite], with [figure] reported for [setting] [cite].
  3. This means that [who is harmed] [how they are harmed].
  4. Previous studies have examined [what has been studied] in [where] [cite], but [the specific thing unexamined in your setting] remains unestablished.
  5. This study therefore [verb: examines, determines, analyses, designs and evaluates] [your exact object] in [your exact setting].

Sentence five must use the same verb as your first specific objective, and your first research question must be the question form of that same sentence. If those three do not match, the panel will find it, because checking alignment is the cheapest question a panel can ask. Our guide to turning objectives into research questions and hypotheses shows the conversion.

The problem statement is the section a panel returns to when it wants to test whether the study was necessary.

Five faults a project panel flags

Fault What it looks like Fix
Background in disguise Three paragraphs of history and definitions, no gap Delete every sentence that does not serve one of the four moves
Uncited assertion “It has been observed that many students…” Either cite it or drop it; observed by whom, reported where
Global problem, local study A problem stated for Nigeria, a study of one department State the problem at the scale you will actually study
No stated gap Prior studies listed, never contrasted with your setting One sentence: they did X in Y; nobody has done Z here
Misaligned closing sentence The problem promises one thing, the objectives deliver another Rewrite objective one to mirror the closing sentence word for word

What to do once the section is written

Read your problem statement aloud and stop at every sentence carrying [cite]. If you cannot open the source in the next two minutes, that sentence is not yet evidence. Then check the alignment chain once more: closing sentence, objective one, research question one. If your topic itself is the problem, what to do when a supervisor rejects your topic is the faster read, and checking whether your topic has already been studied will tell you whether the gap you are claiming exists.

Writing the section is the slow part, and it is slow because you are holding the four moves, the citations and the alignment chain in your head at once. Tesify keeps the structure in front of you while you write, holds your citations against the sentences that need them, and builds the reference list as you go. It is 100% written by you, alongside 9,000+ students and 15,000+ chapters.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a statement of the problem be for a Nigerian final year project?

One to two pages in most departments, typically three to five paragraphs. Length is not the criterion; the four moves are. A one-page statement that completes all four beats a three-page one that never states a gap. Confirm the expectation with your department’s own project guideline.

What is the difference between the background of the study and the statement of the problem?

The background establishes context and narrows towards your topic. The problem statement argues that something is wrong, that it matters, and that nobody has answered it for your setting. Background describes; the problem statement argues. If your problem statement could be moved into the background without anyone noticing, it is not yet a problem statement.

Does the statement of the problem need citations?

Yes, at move two and move four in particular. The claim that a problem exists and the claim that it has not been studied in your context are both empirical claims, and a panel is entitled to ask where each came from. Never let an AI tool supply those references; fabricated citations are common and trivially checkable.

Can I write the statement of the problem before collecting data?

You must. The problem statement justifies the data collection, so it is written and approved first, normally as part of your proposal. Nothing in it should depend on your findings.

How many previous studies should I mention?

Two to four is usually enough here. The problem statement names the shape of what exists so it can contrast your gap against it; the full treatment belongs in Chapter Two.

My topic is very local. Is that a weakness?

No, it is usually the strength. A tightly bounded setting is what makes an undergraduate project finishable and what makes the gap genuinely unfilled. The weakness to avoid is the reverse: stating a national problem and then studying one department.

Should the statement of the problem contain my research questions?

No. It ends with one sentence stating what the study will do. The research questions follow in their own section, phrased as questions, and must mirror the objectives.

Can I use one of the examples on this page in my own project?

Use the shape, not the sentences. Each example above is deliberately built from placeholders rather than real findings, so copying it would submit bracketed markers into your own work. Take the four moves and write your own text around your own sources.

What if there genuinely are no Nigerian studies on my topic?

Then say so precisely and show what you searched. A gap you can describe in search terms is a defensible gap; a gap asserted without a search is the one a panel challenges. Widen to studies on the same problem in comparable settings and state what does not transfer.

My supervisor says the problem statement is “too general”. What does that mean?

Almost always that move two is missing evidence and move four is missing a setting. Add the cited sentence that shows the problem is real, and name the exact population, place and period your study will cover.
